Sweet and Sour Fish Soup

Hubby's friend bought a fishing boat recently.  Now he is into fishing hobby again.
I had this recipe for awhile but didn't cook this fish soup cos' I couldn't get suitable and really fresh fish to prepare it.  It's only last weekend, my hubby brought home his catch. I immediately cooked this soup as the ingredients are available in my fridge.
Photos shown are only half portion of this recipe as the fish is about 500 gm only.
Verdict - a very appetising sweet, sour and spicy fish soup.  Great with rice and drinking it by spoonful.  The fresh fish enhances the flavour of the soup.
Recipe Source - Yum Yum Magazine No. 60 [modified]
Ingredients
5 big Kembong fish - cleaned [I used Ikan Senangin]
Stock and Seasoning
1500 ml water mix with 2-3 tbsp tamarind paste
2 red chillies - cut big pieces
5 chilli padi - crushed or pounded
2 stalks ginger bud - quartered
4 stalks lemongrass - crushed
1 cube ikan bilis stock
1-2 tbsp sugar to taste
1-2 tsp salt to taste

  1. Mix tamarind paste with water and strain to discard the seed.
  2. Put all stock and seasoning ingredients in a pot[I used claypot to cook and serve], bring to boil, then lower heat to simmer for 5-10 minutes or until aromatic.
  3. Bring to a quick boil again before adding fish.  Cook for a further 5 - 10 minutes or until fish is cooked.
  4. Garnish with some chopped coriander leaves before serving.

  2. Hi Ivy, this spicy sweet soup is so easy to prepare. Dump all the ingredients except the fish into the pot, bring to boil for awhile, then add fish and seasoning. Wow...one hot soup to slurp.. with rice.

  3. Hi Kimmy. This soup looks very appetizing like Tom yum soup. Yr ginger flower has a very pretty pink color, is it from yr garden?

  4. Hi Kimmy, this looks super appetizing. Since I moved to KL, we seldom eat fish at home cos it's so hard to buy fresh, good quality fish around my place. You really got me craving for fish now... hot and spicy one!

  5. Hi Madeline, this is much easier to cook with just chillies, lemongrass and ginger bud. Oil less healthy spicy soup. No I bought it for only .40 cents from the vendor selling chilli paste.

  6. Hi Baby Sumo, very fresh fish sold around my house vicinity are rather expensive. Some are farm breed too. Normally, I only buy promfret or smaller fishes that are from the sea. This one is very, very fresh. Makes the soup naturally sweet and fragrant.

  7. Kimmy, this is quite similar to what my grandma used to cook. But she used only ikan kembung, lemongrass and asam keping. Must try this version because I love the addition of bunga kantan.

  8. Hi Kimmy,
This is similar to my mother's Nyonya masak pinang. I have not cooked this for a long time, and funny enough I was just thinking about it a week ago!
Looks delicious! I could slurp on the soup to the last drop! And mash the chili padi into the rice with the soup, delish! I love it with ikan parang! Thanks for linking with CYB!

  9. Hi Phong Hong, your are right. The original recipe uses ikan kembong but since I have freshly caught Ikan Senangin, there it goes into the appetising soup.

  10. Hi Joyce, these days I can take anything to spicy especially biting at the chilli padi. My hubby did exactly what you described. I shivered when I saw him doing that but I only slurp in the tasty soup and enjoyed the fresh fish.

  11. This is like assam fish, i love this kind of spicy, sweet, sour dishes. Unfortunately it's hard to get this type of fish and it's very exp too. Over here, they usually sell frozen fish without heads :)
