The recipe uses fresh tofu skin [aka tau pau] which comes in 2 shapes [round and oblong]. It comes in a packet of 10 pieces. For this dish, I used the round ones cos' I think it is easier to coat with the batter for frying.
Ingredients
10 pieces fresh tofu skin [tau pau] - round shape ones
5 tbsp oil for pan frying
2-3 dried mushrooms - soaked and cut strips
1 red chilli - cut shreds
20 gm ginger - shredded
Batter - mix together
2 tbsp plain flour
1 tbsp cornstarch
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp sesame seeds
5 tbsp water
2 tsp oil
Sauce Ingredients
3 tbsp tomato sauce
2 tbsp Worchester sauce
1 tbsp HP sauce [I substitute with Worchester sauce]
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
- Heat oil in pan [preferably non-stick pan]. Coat tofu skin pieces with batter.
- Pan fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Dish and drain.
- Remove excess oil. Saute ginger and mushrooms until fragrant. Add in the sauce ingredients and chilli.
- Bring to boil and return the fried tofu skin to coat well with the sauce.
- Dish up and garnish with coriander leaves. Serve.
Hi Kimmy, thanks for sharing this wonderful dish. I love tau pau but unfortunately I couldn't get them here.
ReplyDeleteHi Kimmy! I am so hungry looking at your vegetarian dish. I love vegetarian dishes but I get hungry very fast if I take vegetarian food.
ReplyDeleteHi, may i ask where to buy tau pau & which brand ? Thanks
ReplyDeleteBee Lan
Hi Veronica, OIC, if you are in Malaysia, try to get some. It's frozen and can keep well for some time, hehehe!. I like tau pau, a very versatile ingredient in vegetarian cooking. You can cook it with various flavours and taste.
ReplyDeleteHi Phong Hong, you can have this with other meat dishes, then you won't have this problem. My hubby told me his stomach doesn't feel full after his vegetarian meal.
ReplyDeleteHi Bee Lan, there are many brands. It's about the same. I got it from the stall/shop selling vegetarian items. Some stalls selling beancurd stuff at the wet market also sell this.
ReplyDeleteHi Kimmy, i don't seem to find fresh tofu skin in the wet market, will check out vegetarian stall. I always use dried tau pok + tau kwa + mushroom to make similar simple vegetarian dish with veg oyster sauce. This dish of yours looks very flavourful and appetizing ... yum!
ReplyDeleteHi Kimmy this dish looks delicious, going to give it a try. I love vegetarian food. Try not to take too much meat, need to give my stomach some rest. :) I prefer to eat tau pau which is made from soya beans rather than the gluten. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Hi Kimmy, I definitely can have extra rice with this vegetarian cirspy tofu skin.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen, you should be able to find them at the stalls selling vegetarian cooking ingredients. It comes in round and rectangle shapes. I prefer round ones. Looks nicer.
ReplyDeleteHi Madeline, soy ones are tastier and has some natural sweetness and fragrance. Wheat gluten [dried or fresh] are not as tasty and needs stronger flavours.
ReplyDeleteHi Ann, I can just eat the tau pau alone if the sauce is not too salty. Like to bite and chew it.
